Colic – 6 Colic Remedies To Help Your Baby

Colic – 6 Colic Remedies To Help Your Baby

No matter what you try, your baby just keeps crying?

If this sounds familiar it could be that your baby is suffering from colic. Doctors often refer to the rule of 3:

  1. Crying for more than 3 hours a day
  2. Crying for more than 3 weeks
  3. Crying more than 3 days in a week

This sounds simplistic but does provide an idea of just how persistent this form of crying is. For many babies, it can happen at different times of the day, or night and usually develops between the second and fourth week after birth. The good news, it does subside! Normally by about 4 months, the bouts of crying begin to lessen and my 6 months they have gone completely. For colic remedies to help your baby then keep reading.

What Is Colic?

There is no real medical definition of colic, though most mums will tell you that it is very, very real! It can often be a sign of an issue with feeding, sometimes linked to intolerance in the milk protein, that can affect both bottle-fed and breastfed babies. This does not account for many of the cases though, as in most of the situations relating to colic there does not appear to be any intolerance or deeper medical conditions. There is a great definition on Wiki

Symptoms Of Colic?

As mentioned, the starting point is often the rule of 3, but there are other things that are linked to colic too:

  • Fussing, at different times of the day.
  • Feeding, changing or sleep do not ease the crying.
  • Crying can occur at any time.
  • Knees are brought up to the chest when crying, indicating pain in the stomach.
  • Tries to comfort by either the breast or bottle, but then pulls away.

What Causes Colic?

Although it is still a general term for a baby that cry’s for long periods of time, there is still not a clear idea of what causes colic. Some of the issues that are thought to be a factor:

Over-stimulation – Many babies cannot adjust to the stimulation of all of their senses. You will sometimes see that when a baby is in a room with lots of people, where there is constant noise and lights that the crying will be much worse afterwards. I have seen this in Baby Classes, and the only way that the central nervous system can cope is to shut it all out. It does this very effectively by crying until exhaustion sets in. It is a brutal response from the body and can be helped by ensuring that you limit the stimulation to your baby.

Reflux – Linked to the lack of development in the Pyloric Sphincter, this causes the milk to come back up after feeding, bringing acid with it. If your baby is spitting up lots of milk after feeding, it is time to get to your Doctor for some medical assistance. There are medicines that can be given to help and in extreme cases, surgery is needed, though this is rare. Again, for many babies, they will grow out of this as the digestive system matures.

Immature Digestive System – This can really affect the premies, where the digestive system has not fully matured. They can be very sensitive to feeding, both in quantity and time. Again, as the body matures the digestive system will develop and the symptoms will eventually go.

Food Intolerance – This can happen to both breastfed and bottle-fed babies. It is often the milk protein that causes the discomfort but it can really be any foods (if you are breast-feeding). I had one mum who narrowed it down to strawberries! If you think this is an issue, then please do consult your Doctor. If you are bottle feeding there are some great formulas that can help.

Colic Remedies

  • Change your feed – One of the first approaches is to try either changing your formula or cutting out dairy if you are breastfeeding. If the pain is being caused by an intolerance you will normally notice a difference in 4-7 days. As always, please do consult your Doctor or health adviser before doing this.
  • Baby Massage – The techniques on the tummy can really help relieve pressure, trapped wind and ease the discomfort. I have a masterclass, just designed for baby tummy pain. It covers my top baby massage techniques so ease colic, constipation and trapped wind. All of which your baby can be dealing with as part of the symptoms of colic. Constipation often is part of colic, as the feeding pattern can become erratic.
  • Baby Yoga – There are some great movements that you can do to relieve trapped wind, which can often be a cause of tummy pain. You can watch some great Baby Yoga Videos on my Youtube Channel or yoga moves specific to baby tummy pain are also part of the masterclass too.  The Baby Yoga Action Song of The Grand Old Duke Of York is a brilliant one, not only does the mix of song and action distract your baby but the movements help relieve trapped wind and constipation

.

  • Get Outside – I found when my daughter had colic that one of the best ways os soothing her was to take her outside. The fresh air and sun always helped, though I also combined this with a particular holding position too.
  • Holding Pose – I was taught this position when my girls were born (I have twins), and it was one of the BEST SOLUTIONS for colic that combined with these other tips, really did help bring her some comfort and relief. It is called different things, but I know it as ‘tiger in a tree’. You hold your baby in your lap, facing out and then you tip her so she rests along the length of your arm, her body is fully supported by you throughout. This position naturally puts pressure on the tummy, which seems to ease pain from trapped wind (it is also a great way of bringing up trapped wind) and you can also add in movement by rocking or swinging.
  • Colic Drops – There is no real scientific proof that these work, but I did add them into the routine in those colic weeks. Some mums swear by them, others say they do not make a difference. I think, as with most things baby-related, you can add it into your toolbox and see if they help your baby.

Bonus Tips To Try For Colic Remedies

Swaddle – Again, some babies really respond well when they are fussing to being swaddled. You can read more on how to do this, and some of the benefits too in a previous blog on swaddling your baby. Although I found it essential for sleep, I did not find it that beneficial for colic. Though again, it is easy enough to try, so worth a go when you are struggling for remedies for colic.

Swings – As I mentioned in the holding pose, movement can really help your baby when they are distressed or in pain. A baby swing is a great way of achieving this and often allows them to also sleep, which is always a blessing when you have been up for hours trying to offer comfort.

Tips For Mums

Nap – Get rest when you can is number 1. With patterns all over the place during these weeks, you will need your strength.

Help & Support – Do not be afraid to ask your partner, family and friends to help. Even if it is to drop off some meals, do the shopping. Or just be around so you can sleep for an hour. You will NEED support during these weeks. I remember these days well, and I was exhausted.

Other Mums – If you are part of any classes or groups then reach out for that emotional support from other mums. Mums are an awesome tribe that will be there for you, and having a friendly ear at 2 am can be a life-line. I know from my Baby Classes that the mums are often up during the night feeding but texting or chatting in a WhatsApp group. It helps get you through those well known ‘witching hours’.

Helping You And Your Baby with Colic

The Masterclass combines my knowledge of 15 years as a baby massage & yoga instructor with being a parent. I know first hand how Colic affects your everyday. 14 Benefits of Baby Massage

14 Benefits of Baby Massage

Why You Need Baby Massage In Your Daily Baby Routine

We are all very aware of Baby Massage, however, it has only become so widespread during the last 10-15 years. This is mainly due to the amazing research that took place around 2004 by Dr Tiffany Fields at the Touch Institute, Miami. Studies were run in Neo-Natal Units, where pre-term babies were massaged daily.

The results were profound with research showing that babies fed more, slept better and therefore left the hospital before their non-massage counterparts. As you can imagine, it has now lead to the integration of Baby Massage into most Western Cultures as we all accept the benefits of Baby Massage.

Communication

As parents, we know that although our little baby may not have any verbal language they are able to let us know whether they are happy, unhappy, hungry, tired or content in many other ways. It is one of those amazing skills that parents develop quickly – how to ‘read’ their baby! Other’s will come up to your crying baby and say ‘oh he must be hungry?’ but you know that is not the way he acts when hungry, this time he is tired. How do you know?

It’s all about the non-verbal communication, how he cry’s is just part of it. Is he also using his any other parts of his body? Are his eyes closed? As a parent, you learn to read these cue’s very quickly.

How does Baby Massage fit in? Well, how about touch as communication? Parents use it instinctively, we stroke our babies when they are tired or upset, we rock them to soothe them, we pat their back to reassure. Massage is yet another method of adding touch into this language. We call it the power of ‘positive touch’.

Bonding With Baby

Every parent assumes that when their baby arrives they will ‘naturally’ feel a connection. That is not always possible, as for many babies they may be taken away from birth due to arriving early or problems during labour. For parents this trauma can be ongoing, they feel they have missed essential moments with their baby. Massage can help every parent with this bond. A time that you set aside just between you, your baby is the only focus. You are both able to develop that connection in a calm, relax environment. The use of repeated strokes can assist you both to allow a sense of security but also activate the parasympathetic nervous system. This is our involuntary system, that regulates heart rate and blood pressure. Massage can help to regulate the heart rate and lower blood pressure, in both baby and parent – both win! You can read more on Bonding with your baby on our Guest post from Parenting expert, Sarah Weller.

Health Benefits for Baby Massage

There are so many different ways that massage actually benefits the physical, emotional and mental well-being of your baby.

  • Lowers blood pressure
  • Reduces heart rate
  • Produces oxytocin (the feel-good hormone)
  • Decreases adrenaline (one of the hormones relating to stress)
  • Deepens the breath – deeper and longer breathing
  • Assists in weight gain due to the above

Health Benefits for Parents When Massaging Your Baby

Yes, you too benefit when you are performing a baby massage.

The repetition of the strokes can also address your para-sympathetic nervous system in a similar way to your baby’s, including:

  • Lowers your blood pressure
  • Releases Oxytocin
  • Increases the emotional bond between you and your baby
  • Deepens your breath as you tend to breathe more deeply as you perform the strokes
  • Increases your confidence

Establish Baby Routines

At some point in the early months, most parents strive to establish a routine for themselves and their baby. Based around feed times, sleep times and other family aspects (such as an older sibling).

Newborn massage is a great way of assisting in setting habitual behaviour, that you can create by making baby massage part of your baby routine EVERY day.

In all classes, I discuss how adding simple things like lighting and music all help ‘set the scene’. Creating an environment that is then always associated with their baby massage gives your baby a sense of security which adds to the benefit of the routine. With this added security babies often feed and sleep better.

Again a great win for parents.

Many More Benefits Of Baby Massage

There are lots of other benefits for both you and your baby from regular infant massage. However, the key is to learn some techniques that you feel confident enough to take home and use regularly. Many more benefits are discussed during the Massage Your Baby Course.

This course is available in person (UK based), but also online. Often parents in classes bring up new ideas of how massage benefits their family, as we have plenty of time to chat over a cup of tea at the end of classes.

You will cover more of the benefits in both the online course and in person classes.

How Can I Learn Infant Massage?

You can come to local classes if you are in Kent. See the class page for all the details of when and where baby massage classes in West Malling run.

The ability to pop to a live class is not always possible. We have all learned to adapt over the last 18+ months, and many new parents will still be shielding, or just unsure if they are ready to come to a in person class.

Also, I know that many of you reading this will be based in other Countries, so do not worry. You can still gain from all of the baby massage BENEFITS listed but know that you and your family are safe.

The LEARN BABY MASSAGE AT HOME Course is designed to be as full of information as any course that I would normally be delivered in person.

Baby Massage For The Tummy

Massage is well researched for being able to bring relief to many causes of tummy pain, both in babies and adults. By working around the tummy area in slow steady movements you can often help the internal organs to shift any food that may still be working through the system.

Massage can also help with soothing. Working not only the colon but calming the parasympathetic nervous system, which will help to calm your baby too.

It really is a winning duo! You can massage the area but also help your baby feel calmer, which often aids the body and can bring you some much-needed respite from crying.

Baby Action Songs

Baby Action Songs

Baby Yoga

As a Baby Yoga Instructor, I love the simplicity of baby action songs. A simple nursery song combined with some movements never ceases to bring a smile to a baby’s face.

However, did you know there is a lot more going on in that baby brain while they are smiling and moving?[

Your Baby’s Brain

You know that your baby has the most awesome brain, every parent is always astounded at just how quickly their baby develops and gains new skills. Let’s face it, even at birth the amount of brainpower that your baby shows is pretty mind-blowing! (did you know that your baby knows your smell as soon as they are born – amazing and true!)

During the first year, the physical size of your baby’s brain doubles! That just goes to prove that they really do get smarter every day. Also, the area of the brain that shows the most development in the first year is the cerebellum, which is responsible for movement. You can read more about this in the great article by LiveScience.

Developmental Skills

So, how can we harness this rapid growth and boost your baby’s brainpower?

Doing – Yes, really! The main method of really working that grey matter and the method that works best for your baby is the act of doing, watching and engaging in something.

Action Songs

By working on song and movement you are utilising both the left and right sides of your baby’s brain. This really is a double winner for boosting that early development. Different areas of the brain are being activated at the same time! I cover various songs in baby yoga classes but I have also started to put them together in a FREE VIDEO SERIES over on youtube. You just need to grab your baby and you are all good to go! I have put one below so you can see me in action.

Singing, love it or hate it? Luckily enough, your baby is tuned to love the sound of their caregiver’s voice, so even if you think you are sounding horribly out of tune, do not worry your baby will still love it! It is another way to get other family members involved. There really is nothing cuter than a sibling signing to his or her little baby brother or sister! If you have Grandparents who are not nearby, you can always set up that Zoom call and get them singing too.

Movement with Song

Adding in movement during the song really is the next step in working that brain. Your baby will always love listening to songs you sing, but when you start adding in some movement with them, it really takes make the whole thing far more exciting and interactive, which all helps with that brainpower. There are various songs that are available, and you one of the joys is always making up your own too. I have listed some of my favourites below, but feel free to add in any that you know. The lovely thing is that lots of traditional ‘nursery’ songs work so well for this, and many of them are regional. It is a great way of adding in some real diversity and also family history to the next generation.

Other Baby Developmental Techniques

Your baby learns by watching and doing, so what other baby activities can you add into your day?

Baby Massage – this still remains one of the best ways to add-in soo many benefits to your baby. From bonding to singing, there really is a whole lot of techniques there to build that baby brain. You can start baby massage today with the online baby massage course. It has all you need to learn baby massage at home, all delivered in video modules that allow you to learn at your own pace. It also has full support via the private Facebook Group too.

Books – reading with your baby, especially if you are choosing interactive books is another brain-boosting baby activity that you can easily add in every day. I have put in a couple of my favourites below.

Baby Classes – Which One Is Right For Me?

Baby Classes – Which One Is Right For Me?

I Love These Classes

I have been teaching Baby Yoga & Baby Massage for over 15 years and I have seen the ‘baby class’ market change beyond recognition. In many ways it is amazing, the choice out there for parents now is so diverse: swimming, massage, music, signing, gym, messy or play. There can of course never be too much choice – though perhaps it leads to confusion of what it is a parent is looking for?

What Do YOU Want From A Baby Class?

This may seem a strange place to start – but trust me it is a good one! If you are looking for a baby class then YOU need to decide what you want to get out of that class? If it is to meet other mums, pick up some new skills, learn how to get your baby more relaxed or to have time to chat and just get out of the house – they are all great reasons for coming along.

Where do I start?

So start with the basics – what do you want? What do I want my baby to get out of a baby class? Can they benefit in a way that I can clearly see? Then the logistics – where, when and how much. Again, don’t commit to a class that starts just as you are about to put your baby down for a nap. Throwing your routine to ‘fit in’ a class often does not work for either or you. Do not think you have to do ‘all’ the classes straight away, plan what will work for you both. Different activities will also suit different stages in the first 18 months especially.

What Now?

For many parents, attending classes due to Coronavirus is not possible. Several countries are still facing degrees of lockdown and meetings of groups are just not possible. Here in the UK, it seems likely that we will not be able to go to any sort of classes until about September!

For other parents, they are not able to come to classes due to circumstances; older siblings still at home, travel difficulties or even health issues. As an instructor, I am always approached by parents who for various reasons cannot get to a class, and until recently there has been little in the way of alternatives.

The Way Forward

One of the silver linings that has come out of this pandemic has been the amazing array of businesses take their offerings online. We can now learn virtually – from baby massage to making our own sourdough! I have loved working on taking all my knowledge of the last 15 years and transforming it into courses, classes and support for parents all over the world! I now have mums and dads watching my videos and learning all the skills of baby massage and baby yoga in the USA, Australia, Hong Kong and Germany!

We are all brought together by the desire to still provide the best we can for our babies, and learn those techniques that we were planning during pregnancy. As parents, we have all had to adapt.

Online Baby Massage Course

Learning the techniques of baby massage in the comfort and safety of your own home, the online course really does provide all you need to learn how to Massage Your Baby. From which oils to use, time of day to how to help create a great daily routine, it is all in there. Along with video guidance for each and every stroke you need, with an illustrated handbook and full support in my private Facebook group. The course is aimed at parents with babies under the age of 10 months, as those babies crawling can be tricky! All the techniques are suitable from birth and any questions you may have during or after you can just pop into the group and ask.

Getting to meet other parents is still a main component of classes, and the support in the group is just the place. So many relationships are relying on this virtual support, and although nothing beats meeting other parents face to face, it is still so important to have a forum to voice your concerns, questions or just catch up. This is part of any course or class with Buddha Buddies, as support as a parent is vital, whether you are a new mum or already have children.

Massage Your Baby At Home

Baby Yoga – with Buddha Buddies

Baby Yoga is another great tool that you can add to your parenting toolbox, and I love teaching it! It enables parents to bring in movement with even the very young babies but adapts to all stages of development. A BB Baby Yoga class is all about your baby’s development. Think of Yoga as the ‘tool’ we use to highlight what is happening with your baby now and what will happen over the following months. Each class is different with elements that remain repeated, this is to embed the moves into your baby’s brain (more on this on the next two blogs). Combining movement, music, props and a great social dynamic allows your baby to transition through stages with you seeing the clear progression of what is happening – though, more importantly – you understand why!

Again, as physical classes are not available in many countries I have been building a lovely resource of videos over on Youtube. These are all FREE and this library will continue to build. Action songs are a great place to start and from the very young babies all the way through to toddlers they will love the combination of movement and song!

I have put one in here for you to try. Please do have a look at the channel and subscribe for more videos too.

A Baby Class For Everyone

I believe firmly that these classes will benefit anyone – the joy of course – the choice is yours!

Depending on where you are, there may be a range of classes running, but if not then online is certainly a great option. Many companies are also running live virtual classes, which again can offer more choices for you. In the UK you can always check out these great directories that list what is happening where you live, Hoop, Netmums and Class4Kids.

How To Create A Routine With Baby Massage

How To Create A Routine With Baby Massage

Baby Routines – Where to start?

You may think that there is no way you can add in a routine, you bearly have time to have a wee!

Read on, and grab some tips that you can start using TODAY to simply and without any stress look at your day, and how you can start making it easier.

What’s This About Baby Massage?

Baby Massage has now become one of the most popular classes to attend for mums with little babies. No wonder, the classes are chilled, engaging and mums get to learn a whole load of massage techniques that they can use at home.

In a Buddha Buddies Baby Class or online course, all aspects of learning how to massage your baby are covered. Making it part of your routine is an essential element.

What Baby Routine!!!

Although most mums would agree that having a daily routine is something that they have or trying to establish, it is not often as easy as it sounds.

For many mums there are a number of issues that make creating a routine very tricky. These can be from birth issues (long stays in hospital) to post-birth complications for baby or mum, to lack of additional support. Add in mass sleep deprivation and it can all just be too much.

How Can Baby Massage Help?

Somtimes you just need to start small.

I often have very small babies in classes (from 4 weeks and feeding every 2 hours). It can seem a mammoth task to put ANYTHING into a regular pattern. Baby Massage can help.

In a class or with the online course you will learn a ‘massage routine‘, which can take up to 45 mins to complete. However, you can just choose 3-4 massage ‘strokes’ that your baby likes. This may only take 4-5 minutes but can still have a positive effect on your and your baby (you can read all about the Benefits of Baby Massage in our blog).

4-5 Minutes a day – that is all you need to start with.

How To Make A Baby Routine – In Easy Steps

First, think of WHEN that will work.

It is often hugely beneficial before bedtime, after the bath before the last feed. Or this might not work and you find that the morning works best. How is your current baby routine? Do you have a nighttime routine? A daytime routine? A feeding routine? You might have more baby routines than you think.

Working little bits of baby massage into each day, will soon turn into a regular baby routine – without you even trying!

The key is, repeat that 4-5 minutes at roughly the same time, EVERY day – Then you have your daily baby routine!

Breaking this down into small time chunks is doable – a small step. If you repeat this every day, you are creating a Routine! Hurrah – it might be all you can manage at this point.

Just take those few precious moments every day and enjoy.

Learn How To Massage Your Baby

We are not all able to get to a ‘live’ class. So the need for a high quality Baby Massage Course that you can use in the comfort of your own home is needed.

I have developed this online course based on my 15 years of teaching. It includes over 100 mins of Video, a PDF download and full instructions. Alongside a supportive VIP group, where you can ask any questions, during and after the course.

There is a FREE BABY MASSAGE VIDEO you can watch to see if the full course is for you.

Developing your Baby Routine

You are past those early weeks and some parts of your day are starting to look similar. It feels like a massive milestone, you are getting there!

Develop your Baby Massage routine alongside this. If your baby is now happier for longer before bed, then add some more Baby Massage in, take it up to 7-8 minutes, or longer.

Some days will always work better than others, but don’t worry or stress. It is all part of your journey and the important thing is to be aware that those small steps are starting to become more manageable.

Your routine will change as your baby grows, sleeping and feeding patterns change and you will need to adjust around those. Then you put in colds, teething, injections, holidays and days out and it is easy to see why your lovely routine has flown out the window. Just know that you can establish a new routine, putting those small steps back into place.

Your Growing Baby

One of the things I mention in my classes with my Buddha Buddies mummies, every time you reach that point of ‘something needs to change’, it inevitably does!

Having Baby Massage as part of this routine ‘toolkit’ can really help you as a parent. Remember, you can use it at any time.

It can be a great mood changer as it affects so many of the physical and emotional systems. As well as being calming to receive, it is also soothing to give. Those repeated strokes can have a lovely affect on you too!

Your baby will go through enormous changes in this first year – it is indeed a journey for you both. So don’t sweat the small stuff, enjoy those moments and try to make your Baby Massage part of your daily routine.
